The lookup wizard is used to help create new multivalued fields or table level lookup fields. In late June, this stopped working due to a bug.
This caused the following, rather unhelpful, message to appear:

Invalid Reference Error Message
After clicking OK, a further error message appeared which states that the problem was related to the lookup wizard:

Lookup Wizard Error Message
Thanks to Utter Access forum member David Nealey (@volcanics) for providing the above screenshots.

The bug initially affected very few users, partly because neither multivalued fields nor table level lookup fields are used by the vast majority of developers.
In addition, the bug also appeared to be limited to the beta channel (version 2507 build 19009.20000).
However, it later appeared in both Current Channel (version 2506 build 18925.20064) and Current Channel Preview (also version 2506 build 18925.20064)

It was caused indirectly by some unrelated security work.

NOTE: The bug did not affect the slower channels: Monthly Enterprise and Semi-Annual

Current Status (Last Updated 2 July 2025)

The bug was quickly acknowledged by the Access team and rapidly fixed in (or by) the following versions / builds:

Current Channel - fixed in version 2506 build 18925.20138 released on 1 July.

Current Channel (Preview) - fixed in version 2506 build 18925.20076 released on 18 June.

Beta Channel - fixed in version 2507 build 19011.20000 released on 16 June.

It is again worth stressing that no production database should ever be used with either the Beta Channel or Current Channel (Preview) as these will contain bugs.
In theory, these bugs are all identified and fixed before reaching Current Channel but that isn't always possible due to release schedules.

For that reason, most experienced Access developers recommend that all clients are on the Monthly or Semi-Annual channels.
